Should you update to v10?

DISCLAIMER: 

This is one person's opinion if you should update to v10 or not. You have the right to have a different opinion and you should 100% make your own decision if it makes sense for you to embrace the new Evernote – or not.

Stacey Harmon doesn't work for Evernote, although as an Evernote expert, she uses it every single day. 

She has access to the exact same Evernote communication and forums that you do (key ones linked to below). She doesn't get an inside scoop on the roadmap or have an exhaustive list of missing features or features that will be returning. Although she strives to update the factors/features that impact the upgrade advice here, there may be mistakes, or feature releases that happen without her knowledge. You may also view one of the listed features at a different level of importance than she does. That’s okay. Do some research and draw your own conclusion about what version of Evernote works best for you today (or if it does at all). 

This page is designed to be a central resource if you want to use Evernote and to get the information you need to decide the best way to do that.

Are you in this group?

You:

• Just starting with Evernote, or use Evernote lightly (very minimal organization and/or a low quantity of notes).

Should you use v10?

Yes

Evernote Majority

You:

• Use Evernote mostly as a capture tool. You don’t do a lot of organizing and managing of data in Evernote. You mostly use it just for reference and rely on search combined with a limited number of notebooks and/or tags.

• Primarily use Evernote on mobile or through the web client

• Would never think of going to Reddit to research or complain about Evernote

• When I say: Roam Research, Notion, or Nimbus Note, you have likely:

  • Never heard of them, or

  • Tried them and found them too “techie” and returned to Evernote, or

  • Don't care about them

Yes

Most in this group will find the new Evernote experience wonderful. And by embracing the new app now, you’ll be positioning yourself to take full advantage of the rapid evolution of Evernote v10.

However, you may rely on one or two key shortcuts or app details that have yet to be added to v10. If so, then stick with Legacy Evernote (or run it parallel to v10) until those features return.

Evernote Power-User

You:

• Rely on the desktop client (Evernote for Mac or Windows). Can’t live without it.

• Share notes or notebooks with other Evernote users.

• Rely on keyboard shortcuts for efficiently moving notes around

• Rely on 3rd party integrations for workflow automations and efficiencies (Apple script, linking between apps, etc.)

• Use Evernote for comprehensive workflows (such as EverDone).

• Users with over 10K notes also fall in this category as it relates to migrating to v10.

Maybe

Long time power-users will find most of the features they use in Legacy Evernote have returned to v10 and can embrace v10 without disruption to their workflow. There are exceptions however. If you:

• Have over 10K notes

• Rely on a large amount of shared notebooks

• Primarily work in offline mode on desktop

My experience has taught me that users who meet these criteria fall in the 1% of Evernote users that v10 has yet to be optimized for. Expect performance and note/task duplication issues with v10. In this case, you will benefit by running Legacy Evernote parallel to v10 and keep watching as v10 performance is improved. There is no rush to update. Legacy Evernote still works great and your workflow doesn’t have to be disrupted.

If you rely on local notebooks, your only option is to stick with Legacy Evernote. And, this feature will not be built into v10 so starting a migration plan to another software is advised, unless you want to ride out the Legacy Evernote experience (it’s unknown by me how long they will support Legacy Evernote).

Evernote v10 Change Log:

The pace of development is strong with v10.

As of January 28, 2021, Evernote’s launched an official release notes channel (yay!). To find the latest version and release notes, go here. There, within each platform, you’ll find a link to the release notes for previous versions.

Now that Evernote is providing a way for you to see this information, there’s no longer a need to compile it here.

For history sake, find the unofficial v10 release note changes that were compiled by Stacey for dates prior to 1/21/21 below:

Evernote for Mac & Windows

• 1/13/21 (Wednesday) 10.6.9 (Current version)

  • Evernote Home feature release

  • Search Improvements:

    • Notebook/Space filtering in All Notes and search results as a filter option

    • Searching inside shared notebooks should now proactively pick up joined notebooks

  • Tag Improvements:

    • Parent tags (tags with nested tags under them) now only filter the parent tag, unless you choose to filter by all tags under the parent via the Tags Menu

    • The edit tags experience now has improved keyboard navigation.

  • Note Improvements:

    • “Learn Spelling” / Add to Dictionary available via the right-click context menu in the editor. This adds the word to an Evernote custom dictionary, and it will be no longer flagged by spellcheck.

    • Share a note via email

  • Bug fixes, performance issues, and sync improvements

  • Access the keyboard shortcuts reference menu via the Help menu or by using the shortcut CTRL + / or CMD + /

  • Log files can be zipped and the smaller file size allows for easier emailing of logs

  • Navigate to the top/bottom of the note list on Windows with the Home/End keys or the function + down/up arrow keys

  • When you merge notes, the original notes are automatically placed in the trash unless you select "Keep copy of original notes"
